How far would you go for your pet?

New survey reveals the extreme sacrifices people would make for their pets, like ... 63% would choose their pet over their significant other!

There is simply no denying the power that pets hold over us. I suppose there are a number of reasons why we love our dogs and cats (and others) so much, but surely their innocence and unconditional love rank right up there on top. Plus they're cute, and furry, and funny, and sweet, and overall good companions. But I have to think there is something about them providing access to the larger animal world in general as well – domesticated animals are like a bridge between us civilized humans and wildlife, and for this they serve an important role. If we can find compassion for our companion animals, in many cases that compassion seeps out and becomes extended to other elements of the natural world as well.

How fit is Fido?

Canadian Living

Pet obesity is a growing concern. To determine if your dog or cat is overweight, Dr. Patricia Stapley Chase, a member of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, suggests asking yourself the following questions:

To maintain a healthy weight, dogs need 15 to 20 minutes of physical activity — walking, playing fetch — three times a day, and cats need to be active — chasing a ball, playing — for the same amount of time, twice a day.(Remember: you and your pet need to exercise smart in the summer heat.)

But diet is just as important. Stapley Chase suggests asking your vet what your pet's caloric intake should be, then choosing the appropriate food. Make sure that any extra treats, such as cookies or table scraps, fit within your pet's daily limit. "It's better to choose a light food that's lower in fat and higher in fibre than to cut down on your pet's regular food because he may go hungry or not get enough nutrition," says Stapley Chase.

Can dogs learn by watching television?

Medical News Today

I recently received a phone call from a dog trainer in Chicago. It seems that he had received an inquiry from a producer who wanted to pitch the idea of a series of television programs which would be shown on Dog TV. You might have heard that Dog TV is the first television network that has been created specifically for dogs. It provides around-the-clock TV programming that is designed to provide entertainment for dogs.

Labs remain top dog in US, but bulldogs gain ground

The Associated Press via CBS News

America's fondness for Labrador retrievers is still setting records, but bulldogs are breaking new ground. Labs reigned as the nation's top dog last year for the 24th year after breaking poodles' decades-old record in 2013, according to American Kennel Club rankings released. But bulldogs have hit a new high – No. 4 – and their bat-eared cousins, French bulldogs, sauntered into the top 10 for the first time in nearly a century.

February 2, 2015: Popular pet names offer cultural snapshot

Mother Nature Network

Just as baby names rise and fall in popularity, so do names for our furry, four-legged friends.

In recent years, traditional pet names like Fido, Fluffy and Rover have been replaced by popular baby names.

In fact, a 2013 report by John Lewis Pet Insurance, which looked at 50,000 cat and dog names, found that the top 10 pet names were also among the 70 most popular baby names.

Giving our pets human names may speak to how we regard our cats and dogs as part of the family. However, the names can also often be a nod to popular culture.

For example, Bella has topped the list of most popular female dog and cat names – in addition to being a top baby name — for years, which Toni Perling, co-founder of PetBabyNames.com, attributes to the popularity of the “Twilight” series.

Other common pet names have been inspired by hit books and movies, including Simba, Luna, Winnie, Mickey and Minnie.

January 6, 2015: Petco has pulled all Chinese pet treats from stores

Thousands of pets have fallen ill after eating jerky treats in recent years, a trend some have linked to Chinese-made products.

"We believe this is the right thing to do, and we're proud to take this step in the best interest of pets," Petco CEO Jim Myers said in a statement. "What we feed our pets matters."

The FDA said in June that it has received 4,800 complaints since 2007 involving more than 5,600 dogs -- and roughly 1,000 canine deaths. The agency said most of the cases involve chicken, duck or sweet potato jerky products imported from China.

November 11, 2013: Puppy Love and Puppy World Brands

Several of our customers have asked: What is the difference between Puppy Love and Puppy World products?

Both of these brands are manufactured at our Puppy Love plant in Fort Macleod, Alberta. Puppy Love and Puppy World products are all single ingredient products that do not contain any preservatives or additives and are both produced to the same high quality standard.

Puppy Love products are made from 100% Canadian origin meats while Puppy World products are made from USA, Australian and New Zealand frozen meats that are imported directly from meat packers by us.

We believe it's important that you know where the meat is from so you will find the name of the country on the label of each product.

We introduced the Puppy World line to provide another option to our customers at a time when we were experiencing severe shortages of Canadian raw material that we use to make the steer chews. We will continue to grow the line due to the positive response we are receiving from consumers.
